It’s that time of year again, if you can believe it. I can’t! We’re already turning the page on 2015 and entering into the brave new world of a brand new year.
Whether you’re wishing 2015 good riddance, or you’ll miss it, it’s time to take a look at one very crucial thing as we approach our freelance business for the new year.
Attitude really is everything, both in life and in business. It’s hard to keep a positive attitude sometimes, especially as a freelancer and creative entrepreneur. But it’s an important practice to get into the habit of.
Freelancing is hard. You put out articles and pitches and publish eBooks and pour your soul into everything you do, and sometimes nothing happens. Sometimes nothing happens for a really long time.
But that’s when life is asking you whether or not you really want to keep doing that thing. And if you say yes, then you have no choice but to keep going.
Working for yourself doesn’t mean life will be easy and that you’ll have no problems at all. It just means that your problems will be yours, you will get to own them, and you’ll get to fix them how you see fit.
Lots of people like to talk about the up side to freelancing. You get to pick your own hours, your own projects, your own topics, and your own wardrobe.
You also get to choose your own problems and be accountable for your own mistakes. You can’t blame your boss – because your boss is you.
All of that leads me to my main point: have the right attitude. You are responsible for everything in your business – the amazing parts and the crappy parts. But that also means you have the power to change it at any time. If, of course, you have the right outlook.
If you see life as a series of things that happen to you, you’ll feel like a victim, be miserable, and give up a lot faster than you would if you had a different outlook.
But if you choose to see life as a series of things that simply happen – and you understand that while you may not get to choose these events, you get to choose how to react to them – I believe you can create massive change in your business and your life. Positive change.
So here’s to a year of going for it, seeing the new year as an open door to beautiful things, to growth and potential, and to making the commitment to produce as much as you can and to choose the best and most positive outlook whenever you can.
Marie Forleo, over at MarieTV, had a great episode where she said her mantra was to say “and this is what I want”. My computer just shut down for no reason, and this is what I want. I’m late for work and my dog just puked on the carpet, and this is what I want.
Just saying that puts control back in your hands, makes you feel at peace, and has been really helpful for me. Maybe you can try it, too.
I add to that “and that’s okay” sometimes, if I just can’t muster the words “this is what I want”.
You’re breathing, you’re above ground, and you’re awake – which means you’re in control and you still have a chance to make it right.
If you didn’t quite achieve the life of your dreams last year, that’s okay. It’s a brand new year. But remember that the new year isn’t the only time you can decide to change, try something new, or go after that big project. Every second is a new chance to turn things around or keep riding an amazing wave.
So, cheers to you, to your business, and to a fantastic year. I can’t wait to see what we’ll accomplish.
